What factors cause ageing hands?
As time passes, the delicate skin of the hands tends to lose its elasticity, resulting in wrinkles and lax skin. In addition, excessive exposure to UVA rays can cause hyperpigmented lesions (spots), which add to the overall appearance of ageing hands. Sometimes premature ageing can occur for a number of reasons, such as smoking, sun exposure or excessive washing.
Effective hand rejuvenation treatments in SKINMED®

What signs of ageing can be corrected by hand rejuvenation treatments?
- Wrinkled skin / crepey skin: caused by a combination of ageing and depletion of collagen and elastin, as well as excessive use of soap and detergents and excessive UV exposure. This is caused by the fact that collagen and elastin fibres decrease with age and are broken down by UV rays. Repeated washing and exposure to cleaning agents causes the skin on our hands to dehydrate and thin, which can make it look more wrinkled.
- Hollow hands / sagging skin and bulging veins
As we age, our collagen and elastin levels decrease (especially after menopause when there is a sudden drop in estrogen), this leads to loss of fat and soft tissue, skin loses elasticity and can give the appearance of lax skin on the back of the hands. Veins become more prominent as we lose the fat and soft tissue that lies beneath the skin.
- Hyperpigmentation/Sunspots - We've all seen the "age spots" that can appear after years of sun exposure. These appear on the face, hands and arms and are most commonly brown in colour. The hands are an area constantly exposed to the sun and usually show sun spots / hyperpigmentation. They become more prevalent with age, with people over 50 being more susceptible. Most are harmless and do not require medical treatment, only cosmetic.

In what situations is CO₂ laser treatment used in hand rejuvenation treatments?
In the case of the hands, the CO₂ laser is mainly used to improve pigmentation spots. Most are solar lentigo lesions and can be quickly corrected with the CO₂ ablative laser, at the cost of small scabs and a 10-14 day recovery, leaving no residual marks. For diffuse pigmentation spots associated with fine lines, which occur as a result of degradation caused over time by sun exposure, we successfully use the CO₂ rejuvenation laser in serial sessions for a complete removal and firming result on the skin of the hands.
Often we have several of the above mentioned problems associated, and the specialist, following the correct diagnosis, will establish a combined treatment protocol to address all these changes.
